The project reflects a trend to integrate urban life that we can work, live and play in the CBD business community and enjoy a range of high-quality public and private spaces.

Introduction

The project is located in the spectacular harbour area of Sydney. Once a container port, it is now one of the most important urban renewal projects in Sydney. The South District of Barangaroo Port has made Sydney a further step towards the development of convenient transportation, sustainable development and dynamic innovation. In 2008, the Lendlease Group commissioned the international architectural design firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners to lead the entire project design consultant team to master the planning of the Barangaroo Harbour South Block.
Barangaroo Harbour South District Design

Reason to Be Selected

Barangaroo South provides a range of opportunities for people to come together, inhabit, occupy and use the space. It unlocks an unprecedented connection between the city and harbour and provides an intimate human-scale experience that forms a striking contrast to the energy and intensity of Sydney’s CBD. The design creates new layers of public activity for the city and creates a balance between density and amenity. It draws on the extension of the city’s street grid to achieve an intimate network of streets and laneways, which respond to topography and circulation.Urban renewal is about so much more than new buildings.

Highlights:

The design of the South District of Barangaroo Harbour is reconnected to the city and waterfront through new streets, pedestrian walkways, and waterfront areas that connect to Sydney's 14km waterfront via ferry.

Details

The project is a vibrant new coastal business district that brings together a number of eye-catching spaces, such as well-designed office areas, exquisite residential towers and popular shopping, restaurants and hotels that represent the space that once was Transformed into a green space, vitality, and interconnected public space.
The South District of Barangaroo offers a range of opportunities to meet, rest and use the space, connecting the urban and coastal areas for the first time and providing a human experience that is in stark contrast to the high density of the Sydney CBD. The entire design creates a new public event space for the city, creating a balance between density and comfort. In keeping with the city's topography and population, the design extends from the urban street network and depicts a more intimate street trail network. Urban transformation is more than just building high-rise buildings. It is more about revitalizing unused areas, strengthening existing communities and creating new communities.
It’s about bringing an unused area back to life, strengthening existing communities and establishing new ones. While Barangaroo South is a vibrant new waterfront financial district with a mix of striking, thoughtfully designed office space, premium residential buildings and vibrant shopping, dining, hotel, hospitality venues, it represents a reimagined green, thriving and connected public space.

Conclusions

The intimate street trail network provides a range of opportunities for people to meet, rest and use the space. The green ecological public space brings vitality to the region. The design cannot ignore the effect of public spaces like streets on the quality of urban life. In addition, the waterfront area, as an important part of the city, is the stage of the city and is the living room of the citizens. The design of the waterfront city should balance the waterfront area with the urban area and strengthen the connection between the two parts.
