Rain makes the light go green for cyclists in the Danish city of Odense

Introduction

As the first city in Northern Europe, Odense has implemented a brand new rain sensor in a traffic light along their Super Bike Highway which enables the intersection to measure when it is raining. As a result cyclists will experience up to 20 second longer periods of green light, meaning less time standing still at a red light, soaking up what the heavens throw at you those not so sunny days.

Reason to Be Selected

Combining the rain sensor with traffic lights is an innovation trial for increasing the traffic efficient around intersection during bad weathers. And it can also been seen as a priority for bikes when crossing the roads in bad weathers. This smart technological gadget gives protention to make the full use of the driving characteristics of bikes and cars and can help reorgnise the time for them to go accross the intersection quickely.

Highlights:

The rain sensor is a kind of intelligent application for the trafffic lights which can create similar green waves for cycling. It can sense the surroundings automatically according to weather and deliver intelligent signal specially for bikes,a more volnerable traffic group in bad weathers compared with cars.

Details

The rain sensor interacts with two motion detectors also mounted on the traffic light, allowing the system to register when bikes are within 70 meters of the intersection and automatically maintain longer periods of green light for cyclists approaching the junction. A box mounted to the traffic light informs cyclists of the system, and will light up when the system kicks in.

All the main arteries leading to the city centre have green waves for bicycles – ride 20 km/h and you don’t have to put your foot down the whole ride to the city center and home again in the afternoon. There have already been pilot projects to improve this technology, with sensors “reading” how many cyclists are approaching an intersection. If five or more are bunched together, the light will stay green to allow them to roll through.

The idea behind the system is to make it easier to choose the bike, and the rain sensor is a smart technological gadget making every day commuting slightly better for cyclists. Currently the system is installed as a test but it will properly be implemented in other intersections around the city if it turns out to be a success.

Troels Andersen, head of Odense’s ‘City of Cyclists’ project has the following to say on the project;“Our ambition is to make Odense the best city for bikes in Denmark, and for that to happen we need a little extra effort. For that goal green light when it is raining is a nice solution, because if anybody needs to wait in the rain, it is only fair that it is motorists, who are after all sitting in dry surroundings. Then bikes can get going faster!”

Conclusions

To organise good green wave traffic,it is also highly needed to take the negative effects resulted by low mobility into account in abnormal weather, especially for those cities advocating cycling. Although the time left for cars to pass the intersection is shorten relatively, organizing green wave traffic for bikes can still make up for it by reducing the traffic disturbance that may caused by bikes.
