BIG’s master plan seeks to become a catalyst for future investment into the Hill District, moving beyond the standard sustainability solutions and reversing a tendency to vacate, and instead to refocus and reinvest into building a strong community

Introduction

BIG teamed up with West 8 and Atelier Ten to create a barrier-free urban planning area across the site's 28-acre site in the Lower Pittsburgh area, which includes 1,200 housing units and 10,000 square meters of commercial space. A vibrant urban open space. This plan is a realignment and development of the plan 10 years ago, and the new public areas can be excellently linked to various regions and cities.

Reason to Be Selected

The new plan adds more cross-grid roads to the existing site, and finally forms a winding road network that allows people to work up and down the site without any effort. This feature in the green open space coincides with Pittsburgh's historic downtown. The new plan of actively combining terrain is a unique new element in the city.

Highlights:

The integration of the venue and the surrounding environment;

The design of the site across the terrain.

Details

The design scheme enhances the accessibility of the public space in the region and improves the diversity and functionality of the city. In addition, the combination of the triangular road network and the triangular terrain is a terraced structure, which is unique in Pittsburgh, but the balcony created by such a shape can also provide a unique and unforgettable view for the citizens living there. And the sun. Pittsburgh's mayor, Bill Peduto, previously said that this plan is not only for development, but also for the status quo, is a surprisingly special plan.
The gardens designed by West 8 are bathed in the sun, and the roads can effectively support the car, pedestrians and bicycles, which can effectively form a rich urban flow picture. Jamie Maslyn, a partner at West 8, believes that the slopes on the site are perfect for creating a native landscape, and the open spaces created by the design allow the public to feel the depths of the city and nature. The terraced shape of the building provides residents with a spacious outdoor area that allows them to enjoy the outdoor scenery while also encouraging communication. Atelier Ten has opened a comprehensive and sustainable system for the community to efficiently heat and cool the entire area and collect rainwater to irrigate public spaces.

Conclusions

The master plan seeks to be a catalyst for future investment into the region, reversing the status quo and achieving a high-speed sustainability status, becoming a strong community. Respecting the status quo and looking to the future requires designers to keep in mind.
