Introduction

Almere will grow strongly over the next twenty years. The city faces the challenge to combine growth with the pursuit of a safer, more livable, more economical and healthier Almere. A consortium of Cisco, IBM, Alliander, Living PlanIT and Philips is accompanied by Economic Development Board Almere working on a smart society by becoming smarter use of ICT, people and resources in the management and development of Almere. The participating parties have signed a letter of intent for cooperation in May 2012. The municipality is pleased with this step, because the shared knowledge and expertise has to offer this consortium is invaluable for the balanced, sustainable and so 'smart growth' of the city.

Reason to Be Selected

The consortium has Almere decided to help become 'smart society', based on what Almere now has to offer in knowledge and infrastructure needed for ICT innovations. The local culture of pioneering and innovation has played an important role in urban development. Almere expected to grow by 60,000 houses and 100,000 jobs to strengthen the Amsterdam metropolitan area and the northern wing of the Randstad economy in the coming decades. That makes this city attractive because innovate quickly and possible and remains widely used.
Almere Smart Society provides for the creation of an ICT facility, which will include an efficient urban management, innovation and economic growth, strong social cohesion and sustainable development of the city as possible and that can also by smart connections cause substantial cost reductions in the management of the city. As of Almere urban management will be supported by an intelligent digital infrastructure for the exchange of information, services and applications by all municipal agencies and departments. These include information to the public security, traffic and mobility, waste management and coordination after failures, incidents and emergencies in the city.
