Transformation of Orlysquare

Introduction

Sloterdijk is located on the west side of the city of Westpoort. As part of the city's commercial park, it connects the square in front of the train station to the Hemboogstation. With the transfer of trams and bus stops, the square gradually lost its original appeal and became ridiculous in a thick concrete environment. In 2012, the Amsterdam Community Council implemented a new urban planning project that seeks to create a new vision for a single-function office environment. This series of projects includes improving the ecological environment of the project site and providing a vehicle for residence, hotel, short stay and social activities. At the same time, the Westrandweg Expressway, which was built in 2013, will also be a source of vitality.

Details

Orlysquare is a key location between this series of projects. Travelers from city traffic, ports, parks and walkthroughs will once again gather. The plaza renovation project aims to create a sustainable ecological environment that will fulfill its position as a site hub and meet the needs of future residents. The project established a direct link between the site and Brettenpark. The landscape design caters to the site environment and strives to achieve a good connection with the natural environment. It not only provides temporary accommodation for travellers, but also creates a series of hotels, restaurants, leisure activities and bicycle parking.

The site is designed with a public space in mind to make the venue more attractive for investment. Good consultation with the surrounding people and the Dutch Railways has become a solid foundation for project implementation. In addition, the site design has reserved enough creative space for potential developers in the future. The project consists of two important components in series, the walking trail and the Greenwood Plaza. Pedestrian roads connect to the Hemboogstation from the central hall of the station and connect some of the office buildings at the northern entrance. It is like an outdoor balcony at the station, which leads pedestrians to nature and overlooks the Brettenpark.

The landscape design is full of local green vegetation such as berry trees, hawthorn and blue marsh grass. The selection of local native plants is not only because of their own beauty, but also because of their strong appeal to local animals. Through the unique green planting panel design, some green plants are transferred to the panel soil of only 30 cm deep, and this method is used to infiltrate the green plants into the ceiling of the viaduct and the parking lot. Nowadays, visitors can walk through the lush greenery and fragrant scent, and meet the occasional intrusion of animals.

Design a bicycle parking area with a thousand parking spaces reserved. This area is arranged between the station entrance and the bicycle path to encourage pedestrians to prefer green modes of travel. In addition, motorcycle parking spaces, taxi parking areas, and tourist bus stops are also included in the design of the area. Flower stalls, baths and dining cars are also part of Orlysquare.

Conclusions

The renovation of the square has become a transitional area for urban renewal in the region. In the future, Sloterdijk is not only a must-see for tourists, but also a travel choice for all Amsterdam residents.
