A pedestrian and traffic calming plan to restore and rehabilitate from a social, economic, urban and environmental point of view the Cartagena's old town

Details

The Plan focused on pedestrianization and wheeled traffic calming aims to the socio-economic and environmental restoration and rehabilitation of Cartagena's old town. It had an important and productive participation of socio-economic agents of the municipality that have a direct or indirect relationship with the project(traders, disabled, residents, taxi drivers, etc.) and all the citizens and  tourists are beneficiaries.The Plan developed a bicycle hire point, recently automated, with bicycle racks and new dedicated lanes and involved the pedestrianization  of a large set of streets that form the backbone connecting port area and the expansion of the city. Funding: 7,330,285€ from Cartagena's City and fromSpanish Plan for Economic Stimulus and Employment (42% and 38% respectively).

Evidence of success

The average  number of monthly bike hire is 1,500 with 7,290 registered persons, the pedestrianizated area scatters 100,000 sq.m. and there are 3,055 m. of new bike lanes. The creation of hotels and retail businesses reached its highest numbers  in the period between 2006 and 2010 thanks to the improvement of the urbanlandscape through pedestrianization, calming traffic, and restoration offaçades.
