Introduction

While ubiquitous technology is designed to remain largely unnoticed in the urban environment, its presence is felt on a daily basis by the smooth functioning of the city. Ubiquitous Helsinki is a group of projects that aim to develop new ubiquitous services. Ubiquitous computing refers to technology that operates for the most part unnoticed in the urban background. The goal behind the group of Ubiquitous Helsinki projects is to turn Helsinki into a leading development and testing hub for ubiquitous services which are designed according to user needs. In addition, the projects strive to incorporate virtual and digital technologies into the real urban environment.

Reason to Be Selected

There are two projects in the Ubiquitous Helsinki project group. The first is Hubi.fi, which started in August 2007 and ended in July 2009. Hubi.fi collects location-based and service data from the Helsinki metropolitan area, which makes it possible to enhance the smooth functioning of the urban environment by providing services like following trams in real time or setting up meeting points with your friends.

Highlights:

It also contains a recommendation engine that allows users to find events and services that best meet their individual requirements. The project was led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the Helsinki University of Technology. The cooperation partners included Forum Virium Helsinki, Elisa, Digita, YLE - the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Helka, Edupoli, and the City of Helsinki Cultural Office. Vaisala also participated during the first year of the project.
